Need a weekend getaway? Canmore is your perfect destination. There are a lot of things to do and must-see places to visit. We prepared a 2-day itinerary of things to do for your stay.
First thing first, you need to pack your bag, check what to wear depending on the season you visit Canmore. Do not forget to bring layers and sturdy shoes if you are an adventurer and of course, for your security, the bear spray.
Canmore is about an hour away from Calgary in the middle of the rocky mountains. It is the perfect place to unwind, relax and breathe after a long week.
DAY 1:
If you want to get an early start and enjoy as much as possible, you should arrive the night before the 2-day trip. Check out all of our Mountain Retreats for accommodations.
Head out in the morning and bite into a delicious pastry at Le Fournil Bakery, then head to the Bow River where you will enjoy a beautiful sunrise over the Bow Valley. Enjoy a peaceful walk around the river and take in the views of the Three Sisters, Ha Ling Peak and Rundle Mountain range. There are benches and picnic tables to enjoy your pastry and coffee. Keep an eye out for elk, and remember to keep your distance.
Next stop is Grassi Lakes, one of the most popular hiking trails in Canmore. Enjoy an easy hike with beautiful scenery, stunning views of Canmore and the Bow Valley, as well as clear turquoise lakes. Visitors love to spend the day at Grassi Lakes climbing or taking pictures. Have your camera ready!
Alternatively, if you want to explore a little more of Canmore, the Policeman’s Creek Boardwalk offers a nice and relaxing walk with mountain vistas.
Time for a nice lunch! Your tastebuds will be happy as there are a lot of options in Canmore. Craving pizza? Rocket Pie will be your best friend. Looking for something light and healthy? The Communitea Cafe is perfect, and for every order, one tree is planted.
After lunch, spend the afternoon in Kananaskis Country and soak in the breathtaking mountain views and lakes. You may see some bears, elk, moose and more… Follow Alberta Parks guidelines for wildlife safety. Walk across the Blackshale Suspension Bridge and take a memorable photo there.
Come back to your Mountain Retreat to relax, enjoy the hot tub and heated swimming pool, before getting ready for a nice dinner in downtown Canmore. If you are looking for an elevated dining concept with amazing cocktails – 4296 is what you want. You can complete your meal with homemade ice cream next door at Sweet Revenge. If you are looking for great views, The Sensory, Ankor or Rustica are also excellent choices.
DAY 2:
Wake up and enjoy brunch at our favourite spot – Stirling Grill Breakfast – Go early or make a reservation before they are booked up.
Prepare your day pack and set out to enjoy a full day in Bow Valley. Take a drive to Lake Minnewanka, Moraine Lake or Lake Louise. On your way back stop at Johnson Canyon for a nice easy trail with many waterfalls (frozen or not they are just as stunning in any season).
Up for a longer adventure today? Ha Ling Peak, Canmore’s most hiked mountain, is steeped in myth. It offers one of the most spectacular views of the Bow Valley. Be aware in winter you will need to be prepared to climb with proper shoes. There is snow and ice on the trail and it can be slippery.
If you have time for dinner before you head out of town, try some other local restaurants like Sauvage, Crazyweed or Blake.
