Everything you need to know about fat biking in Canmore

You may have heard of the term “fat biking”. Well what is fat biking? Fat biking is essentially a bike with big tires for riding the trails during the winter! It’s a great option for visitors in Canmore to try something new and exciting! 

This post will go over everything you need know about fat biking in Canmore including what to wear, where to rent, where to go and where to stay! 

What to wear fat biking in Canmore

Pants: When picking what pants to wear while fat biking in Canmore you need to take into consideration the weather! You’ll likely be in the snow. Be sure to wear a warm base layer pant with waterproof pants over top!

Jackets & Tops: The more layers the better! Wear a nice warm base layer with a small puffer and a waterproof shell to keep you dry. 

Shoes: It all starts with a good pair of warm socks (or 2). Once you have the socks you’ll need a good pair of winter shoes. Waterproof is the ideal option! Foot warmers will keep those toes nice and warm! 

Toques and Gloves: A warm toque that covers your ears is important. As well as a face cover! Don’t forget the glasses to protect your eyes from the cold wind! Lastly a helmet for protection.

Where to rent?

Rebound Rentals: At rebound rentals Canmore you can rent a fat bike for the full day at $85. 

Canmore Nordic Centre:  At the Canmore Nordic centre you can rent and bike all in the same place. The rentals are either 2 hours for $60 or a full day for $80. 

Where to ride?

Canmore Nordic Centre 

The Nordic Centre has a trail for anyone! Beginners to experts. It is also very convenient to have the ability to rent and hit the trail from the same location. This takes transportation of the bike out of consideration. 

Bow River Loop

This trail is perfect for beginners or anyone looking for a nice trail to ride. You’ll be able to take in incredible views of the Three Sisters Mountain and Old Engine Bridge,. There is no shortage of great scenery for your ride.

Quarry Lake Recreation Area

The Quarry Lake area has several trails beginning at the back of the lake and is also an access point for the more difficult Highline Trail. Follow the power line trail to the right (west) and make a loop up toward the Trans Alta Dam and follow the reservoir back to Spray Lakes Road. Follow the road downhill to return to the Quarry Lake Parking lot.

High Line Trail

Accessed through the Quarry Lake Parking Lot, the Highline Trail is a popular trail with snowshoers and hikers in the winter. The packed snow makes for great fat biking conditions. With a 350 metre elevation gain, this trail can be a challenge, but once you reach the top of the trail it levels out and features beautiful views towards the Town of Canmore and Mount Lady MacDonald. The Highline Trail has multiple descent options including an exit in the Peaks of Grassi subdivision (2.6 km) and the Three Sisters Mountain Village (6 km).
