The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, can be seen in Canmore around 7 times per year. The best chance of seeing the Northern Lights are during the months of October-May. If you’re lucky, you can even see them during the summer. 

Seeing the Northern Lights is always an incredible experience. They truly take your breath away. Even more so in the beautiful Canadian Rockies. The Northern Lights dancing above the mountain peaks is a one of a kind experience.

Where to see the Northern Lights

To see the Northern Lights the most important thing is to be away from city lights. Below are our recommended places to see the northern lights. 

Quarry Lake

Quarry Lake is a great place to see the northern lights. The area is wide open and at a higher elevation than the town of Canmore itself. You will also have a great view of the Three Sisters! 

Lake Minnewanka

Lake Minnewanka is located just 15 minutes from Canmore. This is the perfect place to see the northern lights. With no light pollution near, you will be able to see the dancing northern lights clear as day. 

3 Sisters View Point

Driving up the 3 Sisters parkway road you will find a pull off on the north side of the road. This view point over looks Canmore. This spot is easy to get to as it is very close to town. 

Vermilion Lakes

Vermilion Lakes is located just outside of Banff. With stunning views of the mountain peaks, this spot is a great place to camp out well your waiting to see the northern lights.
